Blue Lagoon private boat charter, on your timing.
Beat the day boats. Anchor at eight, swim before the lagoon fills, and stay through the long afternoon when the public boats head home.
A different version of the same lagoon
The Blue Lagoon is the headline of any first-time Malta trip. The public ferry is fine, but it lands you at eleven with three hundred other guests. A private yacht lands you at eight with the water still flat and the limestone glowing. We anchor on the Cominotto side, drop the swim ladder, and run a small inflatable to the inside cove. The contrast is immediate.
By eleven, when the day boats arrive, we move to San Niklaw Bay for lunch on board, away from the crowd. The galley sends sandwiches up. By three, when the day boats start leaving, we drop back into the lagoon, and the water is empty again.
The arrival window — beat the day boats
Aim to leave Sliema or Buġibba between half past seven and eight. The captain runs north past St Paul's Bay, west of Comino, and drops the anchor on the Cominotto side by nine. You have two clear hours of empty water before the first day boat arrives.
Crystal Lagoon — the second anchor
Round the western tip of Comino for Crystal Lagoon. Smaller, deeper, and almost always quieter. Strong choice for snorkelling and a Seabob run. The captain holds at anchor and the tender does the inshore drop-off.
San Niklaw Bay — lunch on board
The middle-of-day lunch anchor. Sheltered, less photographed, and twenty minutes from the lagoon. We arrange catering on board or a beach club drop on Gozo if the group prefers a sit-down lunch ashore.
Caves and hidden coves accessible only by tender
The cliffs around Comino hide a chain of small caves and shallow inlets the ferry never visits. The captain runs the tender through them after lunch. Bring a snorkel — the water inside the caves is the clearest on the route.
Best yachts for the Comino route
The Sunseeker Manhattan 66 is the most-asked yacht for a Comino day. Plenty of shade, a flybridge, and the engines to make the route easy. For smaller groups, the Axopar 45 Cross Top is the right call. Browse the full list on our Malta fleet page.
Departure points — Sliema, Mġarr Gozo, Buġibba
Sliema is the default. Mġarr Gozo cuts the run-out to twenty minutes if your group is staying on Gozo. Buġibba and St Paul's Bay are the third option for groups in the north. The captain confirms the pickup the evening before.
Water toys for the lagoon — Seabobs, paddleboards, snorkel kits
Snorkels and masks are on every yacht. Seabobs (€300 + VAT) and stand-up paddleboards (€100 + VAT) are the two add-ons most groups pick. The full options list is on our water toys page.
Comino & the Blue Lagoon, planned
- When is the Blue Lagoon least crowded?
- Before nine in the morning and after five in the afternoon. The day boats and the public ferry start arriving from ten and the lagoon fills up by eleven. A private yacht lets you anchor on the inside at eight, swim while the water is still flat, and stay after the day boats leave when the lagoon empties out again.
- Can we anchor overnight at the Blue Lagoon?
- The Blue Lagoon itself is not an overnight anchorage and the harbour-master moves boats out at dusk for safety. For a sleep-aboard charter we move the yacht to a sheltered cove on the Gozo side or to Mġarr ix-Xini before sunset. Most overnight charters use this exact pattern.
- Best yacht for a Comino day?
- A 50 to 70 foot motor yacht is the sweet spot. It is fast enough to leave Sliema at half past eight and reach Crystal Lagoon by nine, has the deck space for ten guests through a full day, and ships with a captain plus a deckhand. Day boats work too, but the bigger yachts have the shade and the salon for the warm hours.
- How long is the trip from Sliema to the Blue Lagoon?
- About forty to fifty minutes on a fast motor yacht in calm conditions. Slightly longer in light easterly weather. We leave Sliema, run past St Paul's Bay, swing west of Comino, and drop the anchor on the Cominotto side of the lagoon where the water is clearest.
- Are toilets and changing on board?
- Yes on every yacht in our list. Even the smallest day boats have a head and a small changing space. The 50 foot upwards yachts have a proper salon and one or two cabins for changing in privacy. Towels are on board.
